As many of you know, the federal government has initiated a shut down while arrangements are made to address the debt ceiling. We understand that some students are experiencing difficulty obtaining the documents we have requested for their financial aid review, particularly the federal tax return transcript from the IRS.
Due to the shutdown, the IRS is operating at a limited capacity and is only completing essential functions. Tax return transcript requests are currently not being processed however you may still submit a request. To do so, please visit: http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/Order-a-Transcript. Once the IRS is restored to normal operations, your transcript will be mailed to the address listed on your tax return. Remember to select the option for the tax return transcript and not the tax account transcript.
Some of you may be eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool instead of submitting a copy of the tax return transcript. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool allows you to electronically update your FAFSA with the tax information you and/or your parents submitted to the IRS. To use the tool, you may visit: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ and click on the link that allows you to update your FAFSA. For more information about the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, you may visit: http://www.umbc.edu/financialaid/irs_data_retrieval.html.
Per federal Department of Education regulations, we are not able to accept any other documents instead of the tax return transcript or the IRS Data Retrieval Tool at this time. Unacceptable documents include the Form 1040, Form 1040A, Form 1040EZ, and any state tax return forms. We do appreciate all the time you have taken to submit the appropriate information to our office and sympathize with any difficulties you may be experiencing as a result of the shutdown.
At this time, no other financial aid procedures, including the disbursement (application) of aid to student billing accounts and refunds, have been affected by the shutdown. We will however post another update should anything change that will affect the UMBC community. Please feel free to contact our office with any questions or concerns. General inquiries can be directed to our front office staff while specific questions regarding your account may be directed to your Financial Aid Counselor. To find the contact information for your counselor, you may visit: http://www.umbc.edu/financialaid/contact.html.
We hope you all are having a pleasant semester and are enjoying the homecoming festivities!
