Need to complete the FAFSA? When completing the FAFSA you should use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool transfers your tax information from the IRS database directly into your FAFSA. Using the tool will increase the accuracy of your FAFSA information and streamline the application, review, and award process.
There are a couple of things to remember when using this tool. First, once information is transferred from the IRS database, it cannot be changed or altered, as it will then be considered invalid. Also, be sure to continue on to the next steps and successfully save and submit your FAFSA after you have transferred your information from the IRS database. If you have filed your taxes electronically, it will take about 2 weeks before the tool is accessible to you. If you have filed your taxes by mail, you will be able to access the tool after about 6-8 weeks. If you are not able to utilize the tool, other documentation will be requested. We are no longer accepting Federal Tax Returns, but must accept Federal Tax Return Transcripts for the 2012-13 academic year. Tax Return Transcripts can be requested by calling the IRS at 1-800-908-9946.
